Winter-Ready Home Checklist

Share This Post:

Even if you’re not ready to say hello to cooler temperatures, it is imperative that you prioritize getting your home winter-ready. Whether you rent or own, this guide offers comprehensive steps to help you protect the place you call home. Let’s get going!

START OUTSIDE

1. Exterior Maintenance

Start with cleaning your gutters and downspouts. Regularly clearing debris from gutters and downspouts is crucial to prevent ice dams and water damage. When debris accumulates, it obstructs water flow, leading to drainage issues. You can also enhance your home’s energy efficiency by sealing gaps and cracks in the foundation, walls, and windows. This proactive step prevents drafts and retains heat within your living space.

2. Landscaping and Yard Care

Prevent potential property damage by trimming tree branches that may fall under the weight of snow or ice. Remember, it’s always easier to trim a tree in October than it is to have a tree fall on your roof in January.

3. Plan for Snow Removal

Be prepared for snowfall by investing in a quality snow shovel or snow blower. Testing your equipment in advance ensures it’s ready for use when needed. If you plan to rely on a local snow removal service, hop onto your local Facebook group or ask your realtor for trusted service providers in your area. Book them in now to ensure their help in the months ahead.

4. Heating System Check

Consider having a professional HVAC inspection to ensure your heating system operates efficiently. Professionals can identify any potential issues and ensure your system is in good working order. Air filter maintenance will also help you maintain good indoor air quality and improve heating efficiency. Additionally, installing a programmable thermostat can optimize energy usage and bring you savings.

5. Insulation and Weather Stripping

Consider using window insulator kits to enhance insulation, keeping warm air inside and blocking cold drafts. Proper insulation contributes to a more comfortable and energy-efficient home. These are a great option if replacing your windows isn’t an available option. You can also replace weather stripping around your doors or use draft stoppers or door sweeps. This change can make a significant difference in maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature.

6. Plumbing Precautions

Depending on the age of your home, you may need to prevent freezing and potential pipe bursts by insulating exposed pipes throughout your property. This insulation is especially important in areas prone to freezing temperatures. Hooray for Canada! To prevent freezing and damage, drain and store outdoor hoses indoors if possible. Additionally, shut off outdoor faucets to avoid potential issues during the winter season.

7. Fireplace and Chimney Maintenance

Professional cleaning and inspection will ensure the safety and functionality of your fireplace. This precautionary step is essential before using your fireplace during winter. You’ll also want to stock up on firewood if you plan to use your wood-burning oven or fireplace. You’re a few cups of hot chocolate away from ensuring you’re ready for those chilly winter nights.

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS

8. Safety Measures

Perform a check of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace batteries as needed to ensure these critical devices function properly. Consider preparing an emergency kit with essential supplies such as blankets, flashlights, batteries, bottled water and non-perishable food items. Having one of these kits in your car while traveling over the holidays might be especially wise. If you’ve ever travelled the 401 Corridor during a snowstorm, you know exactly what we’re talking about.
